How to store products?

If you have your own vegetable garden or summer cottage, then the problem of storing a crop: vegetables, fruits, and berries, arises annually with enviable regularity. After all, a refrigerated cabinet is one (well, in the extreme case, two), and there are quite a lot of products intended for storage for the winter. In addition to vegetables, if you are inclined to stock up, it is also: mushrooms (for more details see the article How to store mushrooms), eggs (about this in the material How to store eggs), greens (How to store greens), smoked foods, fish (How to keep fish) . How to store food without the help of the refrigerator for quite a long time, we will tell in this article. Let's start with vegetables. The main principle of selection is integrity and the absence of rot and damage.

Before storing the tubers, it is necessary to sort and dry the tubers (do not try to keep wet or wet potatoes, it will disappear very quickly anyway). The cellar is best suited for this operation. But if it is not there, then good conditions before the onset of sub-zero temperatures can be created on a balcony or loggia (from 2 to 25 degrees with humidity up to 90percent). In an apartment, potatoes are stored in a plywood box with holes in a dry dark place (for example, in a storage room). Periodically it is necessary to sort it, discarding the tubers beginning to rot and tearing off the sprouts.

This root vegetable is pretty picky. Carrots are stored at high humidity and low temperature (up to 3 degrees), while limiting the access of air. The best conditions are created in wooden thick-walled boxes. Pyramids fit carrots there and covered with sand. Read more about this in the article How to store carrots.

It is also well preserved in sandboxes (or with sawdust, peat). Before laying, root vegetables must be dried and cut the leaves, but leave the stalks.

Onion and garlic

In storage, they are unpretentious. Enough their dry feathers braid in braids. Such "beads" of onion or garlic can be stored hanging in a dark, cool and dry place. Warm air (for example, near a radiator) prevents germination.
